Built on Faith
Our Parish serves all those in the area of Northern Champaign County and Northwestern Vermilion County through St Malachy Church in Rantoul, St Elizabeth Church in Thomasboro, and St Lawrence Church in Penfield. We operate St Malachy School in Rantoul, and care for three parish cemeteries.
Building on the faith of the early farmers in this area, as well as the legacy of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield and Chanute Air Force Base, our mission is to make the saving and transformative grace of Jesus Christ present in our parish boundaries by dedicating ourselves to celebrating the sacraments, devotion to prayer, fostering the faith handed on by the apostles, and building authentic community through fellowship and the works of mercy. As part of the Growing Disciples pastoral plan in the Diocese of Peoria initiated by Bishop Lou Tylka, this collaboration has come about to promote a vibrant, sustainable, mission-driven Church.

It’s a much-needed investment in our future, timed beautifully with the 125th anniversary of St. Malachy Church in December 2026.

Fr. Joel Phelps
Pastor
Fr. Joel Phelps serves as the Pastor (lead priest) for our churches of St. Malachy, St. Elizabeth, and St. Lawrence. He is able to provide ministry in both English and Spanish, and also serves as the Vicar Forane (coordinator) for the Champaign Vicariate of the Peoria Diocese. He has been at St Malachy/St Elizabeth since June of 2017, and St Lawrence since July of 2024.
Fr. John Verrier
Parochial Vicar
Fr. John Verrier serves as Parochial Vicar for our churches. This means that he assists the Pastor in providing spiritual care and the sacraments. He has been helping in this role since July of 2024.
